Mende, a capital on the Lot
A small capital full of charm, Mende winds around its Saint-Pierre cathedral, an imposing 14th-century Gothic building. The medieval lanes, the Notre-Dame bridge over the Lot and the old houses make for a human-scale centre. Suggest a coffee on a terrace, a walk along the Lot and then dinner in a restaurant working with local produce: a simple, genuine date.
The causses, stone and silence
To the south, the Causse Méjean unfurls its karst plateau above 1,000 metres, dotted with stone hamlets and flocks of sheep. Przewalski horses have been reintroduced here and live in semi-freedom. Walking in this vast mineral setting, where the sky feels larger than elsewhere, leaves little room for pretence: you speak more softly, listen better, and the bond builds without strain.
The Lozère Aubrac
To the north, the Lozère Aubrac offers grassy plateaus, big-eyed cattle herds and stone burons where aligot is still served. Marvejols, with its fortified gates, and Nasbinals, a stop on the Compostela trail, make for surprising anchor points. On Lyad, members from Lozère share their finest roads; it is up to you to find someone to go and breathe the heights with.
